I often travel and it is very hard to maintain my meal plan, so many times have to buy food and believe it or not – it is very hard to find quality high-protein fresh food. I am sure many of use have also been in such situations, especially those of you who try to follow a good diet, but have to travel often because of work or different events. In order to be able to make a good decision on what food is good and what is not you have to be aware of the macronutrient profile of the food and have knowledge of its qualities. I have accumulated more than 10 years of experience in this field and I am going to share some tips with you about what to choose when you are on the road and have to eat. The list excludes any supplements.
1. Nuts – raw nuts are easy to find, they are even sold at gas stations or kiosks. They contain sufficient protein and provide the body with quality nutrient, including essential fats and numerous vitamins and minerals. Nuts cut down hunger and because of their slow absorption can make you feel satiated for a longer period of time. Almonds, walnuts, macadamia, hazelnuts – everything is fine as long as they are raw.
2. Fruits – although they have almost no protein, fruits are high in health-promoting bioflavonoids and thus their consumption is beneficial. They also supply the body with different vitamins, natural sugars and potassium, which are vital compounds for the normal functioning of the body and the brain. Fruits satisfy hunger and desire for sweets.
3. Skimmed milk – I am not a milk drinker in general, but very often you may need to eat something quickly and you close to a supermarket. There is meat, there are eggs, but you don’t have where to prepare them and/or have no time. Here is a quick high protein and zero fat solution – drink skimmed milk – a liter of milk provides you with over 30 grams of quality protein, minerals and vitamins. On top of that it will hydrate you well.
4. Fasting – Yes, you read it right, I advise you to fast during period of traveling if you don’t have access to quality food. Why? First of all, fasting allows the body to get rid of toxins and balance blood sugar levels. It also increases insulin sensitivity dramatically. Next time you eat a meal you will digest it and absorb it much better and on top of that you won’t feel guilty that you have eaten some nasty burger simply because you had no other choice. It’s important to drink plenty of water during the period when you are fasting.
